A Little Know Garrett County Tid Bit

Did you know that in the upstairs of the old parsonage at the Zion Lutheran Church in Accident they manufacture Braille Bibles?  I've known this for sometime and did not really take an interest until last night.  My mother-inlaw calls and needs a couple extra hands making Bibles. There are two groups that meet to make two different books of the Bible.  Last night we made 5 copies of the Book of St. John.  Now the interesting part, not only are they in braille but written in Swahili.  So these Bibles that are made in little ole' Accident, MD are sent way off to Africa.  Apparently the Lutheran Braille Workers, Inc. have been making and donating these Bibles since 1949.  There are 7,000 volunteers in the US who produce these braille and large print publication which are then provided free of charge to more than 120 countries in over 30 different languages.  Zion is only 1 of 2 places on the east coast that make these Bibles.  Check out the website for more information www.lbwinc.org. 

Harvest Season at Ridgeview Valley

Local farmers here in Garrett County are busy gathering in their crops preparing for winter's cold months ahead.  I know that all of our crops are finished at home and we are ready to move the cows inside any day now.  Ridgeview is not too far behind. Rick & Paul Kolb of Accident, MD have been busy making close to 90 acres of hay here at Ridgeview.  Pete was around last week and snapped a couple very pretty shots of the already harvested fields.  Enjoy the pics.

 

First Signs of Snow at Deep Creek Lake

It's official, yesterday marked the first snow flakes of the season to fall in Garrett County.  The flurries were beautiful, even for me who doesn't much like cold weather, and at time pretty blizzard like.  At one time I could hardly see the Ridgeview Valley barn from my office window.  Sorry, I didn't get any pictures.  Today, rain.  Tonight, rain and then more snow and even a WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY!  That's early, but I kind of figured we would have an early winter and I won't be surprised if it is a tough one.  Garrett College Weather even says possible power outages, thank goodness we have a generator and a wood stove.  So, dig out your cross country skis and I will get the groomer ready for a fun winter.

Construction Update at Ridgeview Valley

I am really excited to be able to share these photos of the new construction on Lot 85 owned by Richard Fazio.  This home is located further up the hill on Falcon's Way and is the first construction on that street.  It is really going to be a beautiful home with white pillars and wrap around porches.  Enjoy the photos!

Autumn Glory Weekend

Autumn Glory is here already and the leaves are even more amazing than last weekend.  I love this weekend in Garrett County, the whole place just comes alive.  I drove through Oakland this morning and they are already preparing for the big weekend.  This marks the 42nd year that we have celebrated autumn in all of its glory with the Autumn Glory Festival. If you were planning to come to Deep Creek Lake this weekend is the time.  The color is gorgeous and there is a ton of activities.  Here is the  Autumn Glory Schedule of events.
