I was reading in the USA Today earlier this week and noticed a little article regarding the Black Bear population in Garrett County. In summary, it basically said that there are not as many cubs this year as years in the past possibly due to a lack of acorns to eat. I was going to post on that earlier, but didn't get around to it and now I have read the same thing in the Cumberland Times-News. The DNR has finished their yearly check on known Black Bear dens and have reported 2.7 cubs per sow. The thought is that the gypsy moth infestation could be causing the lack of acorns which in turn means a lack of food for the bears. Hopefully there will be more acorns this year, I enjoy seeing the bears. A couple were spotted in the community last year, but I didn't have the privilege.
