I received this wonderful story from John & Lisa Collins. They are our newest owners of home site #6, also known as "Notre Terre." John relayed this story to me about their trip to Deep Creek to celebrate their 22nd Anniversary. I didn't know you guys were bear hunters.
Story of Our Special Day in Deep Creek Lake:
It was the culmination of a big trip we took to the Great Smoky Mountains at the end of October. We spent 6 days in a secluded romantic cabin (actually called "Secluded Romance") near Pigeon Forge Tennessee. It is so lovely there with so much to do and see in the area. Fall foliage was in full brilliance. We highly recommend it to anyone who loves the outdoors. We thought we would head back home by way of Deep Creek Lake and stay 2 nights for Halloween and November 1st, our 22nd anniversary. So we drove from Tennessee right up through the middle of West Virginia to Deep Creek Lake. We spent our anniversary day enjoying the area following the wonderful suggestions you and Sandy gave us. We went to Mt. Lake Park to the Simon Pearce glass factory and watched glass blowing in the works. We bought a beautiful glass globe Christmas ornament from the Wellesley collection. We used the $50 "good luck money" we won playing Keno a while back. When we won the money, we promised to only use it for something wonderful to remind us of Deep Creek Lake and our land purchase. We then headed into Oakland and walked around town. We saw the old train station, the Historical Society Museum (which is completely amazing!), a great book store and some cute shops. What a nice day! Then it was getting close to sunset, we took the champagne given to us by our friends and put 2 lawn chairs on our land, "Notre Terre". You can imagine how excited Lisa and I were actually sitting on the lot we now own. We kicked back as if we were sitting on the deck of the house yet to be built. We sat there looking around at the various views from the lot and enjoying the peaceful calm of the valley. What a sight we must have been. The owner of the house at the very end of Gravelly Run drove by, saw us there celebrating and asked, "Are you hunting bears?" We laughed and told him we were celebrating the new land. As the sun began to set behind the ridge we heard the repeated calls of a hawk as it was gliding along in the sky directly over us. You know? That long slow echoing whistle sound they make. As the sky became dark the hawk flew away. What a beautiful evening we spent there. Who needs a house?? After this we went to Wisp for the haunted house and haunted coaster ride. We went into the haunted house and I gotta' tell ya', Lisa and I may be grown adults, but we were STILL scared and creeped out walking through that house. After exiting the house there was a maze we had to navigate while being chased by chain saw wielding maniacs and creepy ghouls. There was no way out! At least until a kind ghoul opened the way out for us. After that we rode the coaster down the mountain and chatted with some nice people by a bonfire. We even had some time later to wear Halloween masks and spend some time at the Black Bear. What a memorable 22nd wedding anniversary!
Here are some fun photos that John sent me of their celebration.
We like to call this one "Champagne in the Hood"
"WE HAVE CHAMPAGNE, LET'S CELEBRATE"
